The Sustainability Unit works interdisciplinarily and across faculties to disseminate knowledge about the development of sustainable technologies and structures at TU Wien and addresses topics of appropriate technologies (GRAT = Group for Adapted Technology). Lectures, exercises, and practical courses are offered, along with the opportunity to write diploma and doctoral theses in this area, as well as comprehensive consultations for students and sustainable solutions for extremely environmentally destructive and energy-intensive industrial communities.

Course Content: The lectures provide basic knowledge about the concepts of Appropriate Technology and development technology as well as chances and challenges of sustainable development and social-ecological transformation leading to climate change, poverty and resource depletion. Concepts of Appropriate Technology in developing countries, North-South Dialogue and technology transfer, Skills and preparation for working in the field; Appropriate technology for low-resource settings; and Waste management. At the same time, experts from the field of science, technology and civil society offer specific practical know-how of sustainability in order to explain the significance and importance of Appropriate Technology in the profession of the graduate engineer.

Lerninhalt: Die Vorlesung vermittelt Grundlagenwissen über die Konzepte der Angepasste Technologie und Entwicklungstechnologie sowie Chancen und Herausforderungen nachhaltiger Entwicklung und sozial-ökologischer Transformation, i. e. Klimawandel, Armut und Ressourcenknappheit. Konzepte der AT in Entwicklungsländern, Nord-Süd-Dialog und Technologietransfer; Fähigkeiten und Vorbereitung auf technologische Tätigkeit vor Ort; Angemessene Technologie für geringe Ressourcen Settings; und Abfallwirtschaft. Gleichzeitig bieten Expert/innen aus Wissenschaft, Technologie und Zivilgesellschaft praxisnahe Einblicke in spezifische Handlungsfelder der Nachhaltigkeit um die Bedeutung der Angepassten Technologie für die Berufspraxis des Diplom-Ingenieurs zu verdeutlichen.

Grenzen und Chancen im Umweltschutz für eine Nachhaltige Entwicklungszusammenarbeit;

Nachhaltige Entwicklung bedingt einen sorgsamen Umgang mit Lebensgrundlagen. Die wirtschaftliche und soziale Entwicklung der Menschheit ging bisher allerdings mit einer weitgehend rücksichtslosen Ausbeutung der natürlichen Ressourcen einher. Ein stetige Diskurs und die konsequente Orientierung an den Bedürfnissen des globalen Südens und der Betroffenen ist daher notwendig für eine partnerschaftliche Zusammenarbeit.
