History
The TU Ball is one of the oldest still-existing ball events in Vienna. Its origins go back to the Techniker-Kränzchen
, which were regularly held from the founding of the Polytechnic Institute in 1815 (today’s TU Wien). It is known and loved for its youthful flair and the creative and practical ball favors.
The brothers Johann and Joseph Strauss, who studied at the Polytechnic Institute before their world careers as musicians, dedicated a long series of waltzes and polkas to the “gentlemen students of technology.”
Then as now, your ball enjoyment serves a good cause. The TU Ball supports the Study Success Aid and the Reading and STEM Promotion of the HTU. This provides support for students who are in challenging situations.
The last Thursday in January is traditionally the day on which the TU Ball takes place.
The music program ranges from classical waltz music and big band sound to New Orleans jazz and Latin American rhythms. Unique among Viennese balls is the folk music in the Geheime Ratstube.
The opening is designed with great care. Under the direction of Ms. Ingeborg Knopf-Bousa, there is a successful mix of traditional proceedings, new ideas, and elaborate choreography for the opening committee to the sounds of the TU Orchestra.
