Lace-Application, 2025
Artwork Description:
This piece explores the theme of Chaos and Order, represented through a strand of lace that transitions from chaotic and exciting on the left to calm and organized on the right. The technique and structure of the strand itself reflect this transformation. The strand can be seen as a lifeline showing major life-events, which are both chaotic and exciting. Then life gets calm, more orderly as everything starts falling into place. The strand can also be seen as a snippet of life, capturing a moment of physical, emotional or
mental transition, where chaos and order either clash or coexist in harmony. What adds complexity to this work is that it can be read both left to right and right to left, with each direction offering contrasting interpretations in itself. Both interpretations positive and negative are integral to the work, leaving space for reflection on the ever-changing ways of life.
Biography:
I’m Hannah, a lace artist (specifically bobbin-lace) who loves using this old technique to create modern art pieces. I mostly create pictures and applications for clothes. I started my lace-making journey in 2016 at a craft week called ’Von Farben und Fäden’, where a teacher taught me the basics. Since then I’ve attended a few courses, but I am mostly self-taught. My work has been featured at the 2024 lace-exhibition in St. Florian, where I had the opportunity to showcase my skill by performing a live lace-making demonstration, engaging visitors with the intricate process and my history with the craft. I’m constantly learning new types of lace to utilize the different techniques in my work. Recently I started to design my own patterns.
