pépinière – Thibaut Kouptchinsky

generative art, 2025

Artwork Description:
pépinière [pepinj] feminine noun: 1. (Botany) nursery 2. (figurative) (de talents) breeding ground
Pépinière is a place where plants are grown. Binary trees are abstract graph structures designed to encapsulate information in a succinct, useful—and therefore powerful—way. In the imagery of the post-apocalypse, after the collapse of the old world, the first sign of resurgence is vegetation reclaiming the ruins of the old structure. Is this chaos re-emerging, or order restoring itself? Using random distribution laws, pépinière allows structures to unfold unpredictably, generating unique, variable patterns—all from the same algorithm. Whether or not binary trees can actually be free, p´epiniere presents a possible alternative life for them.

Biography:
Born in Belgium where I used to play theatre and I studied mathematics, it is the latest which made me travel abroad, from Japan to Austria. Now based in Vienna, contemporary art has taken an increasingly important place in my life. In fact it gave me so much of myself and the world that I found impossible to not make some myself.
My work interrogates how mathematics—often perceived as neutral or objective—shapes our vision of progress, embedding itself in design, economics, politics, and technology. It intertwines with tools of oppression, from algorithmic surveillance to ideological frameworks, even manifesting in the rigid pedagogy of early education.
Today’s technocratic frenzy amplifies this: killer drones terrorize under the guise of precision, AI surveils while being sanctified, and sleek geometries embody corporate and authoritarian power. The ”ideal” shapes of wealth—pristine skyscrapers, market graphs—mask the violence of their abstraction.
Yet mathematics is also for me a refuge for those who want to speak the truth. Truth in its embedding plurality rather than its divisive duality. I reclaim its objects as sources of creativity and liberation, centering playfulness, intuition, and radical imagination. My work is an act of renegotiation—a bridge between logic and dream, where algorithms breathe life rather than control. Drawing inspiration from thriving and vanishing cultures, natures, and mystic traditions, I envision alternative futures rooted in fluidity and connection.
Currently, I explore generative art, using code and SVGs to revisit mathematical concepts. Here, the tension between control and spontaneity fascinates me: the algorithm remains, but its rigidity dissolves into possibility.
